High Demand for IT Skills in the UK

The current economic climate has lead to a decline in many industries, leading to many realising how fragile their employment is. Because of this, many people have began thinking about entering a career which offers longevity and more financial stability - however the market turns. Despite previous concerns that IT may decline, this has not proved to be the case, even in this current economic downturn. Instead, IT jobs have remained remarkably safe and candidates with IT skills are still very much in demand. In fact, recent studies have reported difficulties retaining staff with IT skills such as Oracle, SAP, business analysis and network support due to the opportunities afforded to them. The demand for these skills is reported likely to grow further over the coming years, so IT professionals will remain highly sought-after.

There are a number of reasons for this high level of demand. Firstly, technology is continually changing. Technology does not only need to be developed, but implemented across the world. This means that nearly every business will require the assistance of IT professionals as technology advances.

When new technology is developed there is a need for individuals to successfully market the technology to businesses. Once the technology is marketed, installation is required, staff training needed as well as continual aid should any difficulties arise. This requires many different individuals, with a range of different skills, all in the broad area of IT. Businesses make money by remaining at the top of their game, so it is often very important to businesses to make sure they have the correct technology and qualified staff to help them stay one step ahead. While there are businesses, this is sure to be the case.

In addition, there are more IT jobs opening up in the public sector. The public sector is recently experiencing an overhaul, many key individuals have realised that to run strong public services, there is a need to operate with more efficiency and in similar ways to a business. The public sector is putting a large investment into IT in order to deliver overall savings and improved service to members of the public. This has lead to increased demand for key IT skills in both local and national government - opening up even more opportunities for those with IT knowledge. The public sector is now a great option for IT professionals as pay has greatly increased in order to compete with businesses for the best individuals.

If you are interested in an IT career there are many jobs to choose from. .NET Development skills are in high demand, as this technology is fairly new, with many businesses needing assistance implementing and maintaining it. This attracts a very high salary. You can also find many jobs in IT security, as security is a high priority for all businesses and there are currently a shortage of qualified specialists in this area. Networking IT skills are also in demand, with individuals who are confident with numerous methods of online communication including email, and instant messaging essential. There are also many roles for help desk workers and support staff. This job is ideal for those with a previous customer service background who wish to branch into IT.
